1.    Winners announced in REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest

The REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest received over fifty submissions from across Europe. The jury selected two winners amongst the 47 finalists: Wastewatchers (NL) and Transition Surplus Food Project (UK). Zero Waste Aiud (RO) gathered over 17,000 votes to win the public award. The winners have the opportunity to present their projects at the REFRESH Food Waste 2017 Conference on 18 May 2017 in Berlin.

2.    REFRESH Food Waste 2017 | Multi-stakeholder conference | 18 May 2017, Berlin

REFRESH Food Waste 2017 will bring together diverse stakeholder groups and will connect champions of food waste prevention, reduction, and valorization from across Europe. The event will include presentations, discussions and interactive sessions with REFRESH researchers, networking sessions, presentation of the REFRESH Food Waste Solution Contest winners, as well as a public food waste event together with REFRESH partner Feedback. The Conference will feature an Innovators’ Fair, where food waste innovators can present their projects and insights with a poster or stand. Registration for REFRESH Food Waste 2017 is already closed, however you can still apply for the waiting list.

3.    Food Waste Innovation Incubator Day | Workshop | 19 May 2017, Berlin

The aim of this workshop is to bring food waste innovators and experts together to learn from each other, develop solutions to food waste issues in the food chain, and improve cooperation. The main target groups are entrepreneurs, companies in the food industry, and policy makers. The workshop is co-hosted with the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and carried out in collaboration with the Food Surplus Entrepreneurs Network. Due to the limited capacity of the workshop the Incubator Day is by invitation only.

4.    Spain: Framework for Action signed, first pilot project "Gastrofira" started

As of February 2017, 16 organizations participating in the Spanish REFRESH Platform have signed a Framework for Action that defines the commitment to develop or promote pilot projects to reduce food waste along the food chain. In early 2017 the first phase of the first pilot project "Gastrofira" was completed, which involved quantifying food waste generated by the catering service of Feria de Barcelona during an international event. Waste generated in cooking and by the diners has been taken into account. This first quantification will serve as a baseline to measure the positive impact of certain interventions that will be carried out at upcoming events.

5.    German national platform takes action – baselining and pilot projects are taking shape

Since its last “Steering Committee” meeting on 6 October 2016 the German Pilot Working Platform (PWP) started to take action. Member companies initiated individual baseline activities with first insights expected in April 2017. Furthermore, the PWP discussed the priority areas for Germany and how these could be addressed through targeted interventions.

6.    Hungary national platform accepted Framework for Action

The Steering Committee of the „Food is Value”- Forum Against Food Loss and Waste has agreed on the main goals and priorities set out in the Framework for Action document. The document goes on to outline how these priorities will be addressed through project targets and project measurement, as well as the core responsibilities of the platform members.

7.    Dutch Taskforce connects initiatives against Food Waste

The Dutch Taskforce, launched in January 2017, aims to contribute to preventing and reducing food waste, and become an international frontrunner in the valorisation of agri-food residual streams. The Taskforce is a coalition of companies across the full food supply chain, national and local authorities, a civil society organisation and other invited members. The first official meeting took place in March 2017.

8.    China: REFRESH kicks off with Food Waste Forum

Over 100 professionals from government, the business community, science institutions, non-governmental organizations and international organizations gathered in Beijing on November 26th 2016 to launch REFRESH in China and promote the knowledge-sharing initiative for the global measurement and reduction of food loss and waste. In addition, a pre-cast on a food waste solution youth contest was released.

9.     National, Qualitative Insight on Household & Catering Food Waste

The report presents the results from a qualitative research into household food waste in Hungary, Germany, Spain and The Netherlands. In each of the individual countries, six focus groups are conducted. This report presents the most striking similarities and differences between the countries and the analysis per country. It shows that awareness and motivation regarding food waste are present and on the rise in all countries but to different degrees and with different contingencies, depending on socio-cultural and socio-economic factors.

10.    Inventory of Business Change Tools

This report presents an extensive inventory of existing tools which support businesses to prevent food waste along the whole supply chain. The core objective driving the creation of this inventory is to inform further REFRESH research, to understand current business needs, and use this information to identify potential gaps in this market.

11.    Consumers' Behavioural Economic Interrelationships and Typologies

Quantifying and understanding inconsistency in the generation of consumer food waste is particularly important, to target intervention strategies where they are most efficient. This report analyses two of the largest available datasets to define consumer behavioural typologies and develop a systems map to illustrate potential links between consumer behaviour and the creation/reduction of food waste.

12.    Socio-Economic Implications of Food Waste: Economics of Innovation

Innovation is fundamental for preventing or reducing business food waste. REFRESH identifies the drivers of technological (process or product) and organizational innovation and their impact on waste. Economic gains (competitiveness and productivity) and territorial specificities are the main drivers of adoption.

16.    Generic Strategy Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing

This report provides guidance on how to apply Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) for studies that specifically explore questions on handling side flows from the food supply chain. It is aimed at practitioners who have working knowledge of applying LCA and LCC in their field of expertise (e.g. food processing or waste handling) and policy makers that would like to get a deeper understanding on how to interpret and formulate an LCA and LCC based problem.

17.    Consumption Life Cycle Contributions: Assessment of Practical Methodologies for In-Home Food Waste Measurement

Different methods of assessing consumer in-home food waste are compared in this report: survey on food waste in general; survey on food waste in the past week; keeping a food waste diary; letting consumers photograph their food waste; letting consumers collect food waste in kitchen caddies. Results indicate which survey questions appear suitable to measure food waste in large surveys, and which can best be avoided. It also provides insights in new measurement methods for smaller samples.
